Staff, Friends, Family & Customers of Vicky's Beauty Shop  – Local Business Hosts Fund-Raising Event for Children’s Hospital

Vicky Head’s nephew, Tyler, was treated at Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee ten years ago for heart and respiratory problems.  Unfortunately, Tyler lost his battle, but the hospital staff made such an impression on Vicky and her family that she decided to spearhead an event to help raise funds for the hospital.

The 7th annual “Cut-A-Thon” was held last Saturday at Vicky’s Beauty Shop, with the proceeds going to Children’s Hospital’s patient care fund.  Since the fund-raiser began 7 years ago, more than $30,000 has been raised for Children’s Hospital.  During the event, money is gathered through haircuts, raffles, a bake sale and a brat fry.  Rummage sales are also held throughout the year for this great cause.

According to Vicky, she couldn't have done it without the support of so many other great people who are involved each year, including the staff and customers of Vicky's Beauty Shop, along with various other friends and family members.

Thank you to everyone involved in this cause for making such a positive difference in our community!

Tiger Cub Den No. 3050 – Future Eagle Scouts Develop Friendship with Neenah Soldier Serving in Iraq

Sarah Turner, a soldier in the U.S. Army, has finally returned home to Neenah after serving in Iraq.  For the last six months of her tour, she had been receiving letters and gifts from the generous Tiger Cubs at of Den No. 3050 at St. Mary Elementary School.

Last fall, the Tiger Cubs’ den mother, Nancy Sowatzke, decided that it would be a good idea for her Cubs to write letters and send care packages to Sarah in order to show how much her bravery meant to them.

Approximately 25 pounds worth of supplies were mailed to Sarah last year, along with thank-you letters written by the Tiger Cubs.  In addition, the Cubs sent Sarah candy and cards for Valentine’s Day.

While Sarah was recently home on leave, she met with the den to thank them for their kindness and support, and also talked about her experiences while in Iraq.

Thank you to Nancy Sowatzke and Tiger Cub Den No. 3050 for your support of our local troops overseas!

Jay Breyer and YES – Youth Educated in Safety Organization Continues to Help Missing Children and Their Families after 10 Years of Service

After 10 years in the Fox Valley, Jay Breyer says that his non-profit organization, Youth Educated in Safety (YES), still has a lot more it can do to help families find missing children.

Regardless, YES has already accomplished so much.  Over the years, the organization has provided more than 25,000 families with child identification kits that allow for the recording of photos and DNA just in case the unthinkable happens.  When the unthinkable does happen, YES is there to lend support to the families.  The organization has helped bring more than 200 missing children back to their families.  But most importantly, YES works on educating children and families in order to reduce the amount of child abductions that occur each year.

Breyer got involved with missing children cases after his niece, Amy, was abducted and murdered in 1991.  After assisting the family of Cora Jones, who was abducted and killed in 1994, Cora’s father, Rick, helped Breyer start the YES organization.  Breyer commits 10 to 40 hours a week to YES, and recently hired Chris Jossart as executive director of the organization, so Breyer can focus more on the missing children cases.  The organization functions on a budget of approximately $25,000 to $35,000 annually, which largely comes from grant applications and donations.  To see how you can help out, please click here.

Thank you to Jay Breyer and everyone at YES for all you do for missing children and their families!

The Mustang Mentors – Little Chute High School Student Donate Their Time to Help and Listen to Younger Students

The Little Chute High School’s Mustang Mentors Program has approximately 70 student members who take time out of their schedules to meet with elementary and middle school students to discuss their problems and concerns (both at school and at home).

The high school students who are in the program meet with the younger students on a regular basis, sometimes just to talk.  The younger children are often more likely to “open up” to people who are closer to their age, as opposed to parents and other adults, because their mentors can often relate to their problems and concerns.

The Mustang Mentors program began through another program called “Teens Caring and Sharing,” which was started in 1988.  “Teens Caring and Sharing” became so popular that it became necessary to create the Mustang Mentors during the 1995-95 school year.

Members of Mustang Mentors need to apply for the program before they are accepted.  After acceptance, new recruits go through a training program designed to teach better communication skills, and how to build a comfortable rapport with the younger students.  Member of the program must be good role models, and be willing to help steer children down the right path in life.  Many of the younger students are referred to the program by their teachers because they are having a hard time, whether at school or at home.

A big thank you to the members of the Mustang Mentors for making a positive difference in the Fox Valley!
